Steam cleaning is one of the best ways to ensure that your upholstered furniture is properly deep cleaned, sanitized and germ-free. Here are a few tips from our pros on how to clean your upholstery with a steam cleaner:
First, check the instructions
First of all, make sure that your furniture can be steam cleaned. Check for any cleaning codes or tabs, or if unsure, contact the manufacturer for cleaning instructions.
In general, you should abstain from steam cleaning delicate upholstery fabrics, such as silk, velvet or any other fabric which cannot be treated with water or withstand the heat of the steam.
Then, go for DIY cleaning
If your upholstery can be cleaned with a steam cleaner, then you are ready to perform your DIY upholstery deep steam cleaning! First, meticulously vacuum the furniture, so that you can remove any dust and residues from its surface and as much as possible of the dust accumulated inside it.
Inspect the entire surface of your upholstered furniture for any stains and areas which need pre-treating with specialized stain removal or heavy duty cleaning solutions and pre-treat them accordingly.
But, don’t forget to test the solution
Always take the time to test any solutions which you plan on using on a small area of the fabric before proceeding with the cleaning. For an added effect, you can spray your furniture with commercial upholstery cleaning spray before going ahead with the deep steam cleaning. Let it sit and then wipe it off with a clean cloth. Add the cleaning solution to the water tank of your steam cleaning machine, as per the instructions of the manufacturer and proceed to steam clean the furniture.
Use the upholstery attachment and adjust your steam cleaning machine to the proper setting in accordance with the type of fabric you will be cleaning. Switch it on and perform the cleaning with even and long strokes along the fabric. Go area by area, so that you are sure to cover the entire upholstery during the cleaning.
Remove any detachable cushions and clean them separately on both sides. Use the steam cleaner to clean the area beneath them as well. After the shampooing, repeat the upholstery steam cleaning with clean water only, so that you rinse off the upholstery from the detergent or solution used.
If you have a wet/dry vacuum cleaner or such an attachment and function on your steam cleaner, use it to enhance the drying process so that you can use your furniture as soon as possible. Do this in the same manner – with long, even strokes, so that you get as much of the water out as possible.
