However careful you are, chances are that your carpet will become soiled, suffer various spills and accumulate the dust and another residue from your shoes and your pets’ paws. Don’t worry, you can keep it clean, safe and looking great without the help of expensive carpet cleaning machines and professional help!
Here are some tips on how to maintain and clean your carpet by hand properly:
Treat spills as soon as possible
The faster you react after your carpet suffers a spill – the better the chances and the easier it will be to keep it from staining and becoming damaged. Use paper towels or a dry cloth to soak up all excess liquid, or use a spoon or spatula to remove any non-liquid from the fibers.
Don’t rub it
However tempted you may feel to rub off the spill from your carpet, it is recommended that you blot it instead. Rubbing can further increase the perimeter of the stain and can cause it to get embedded deeper in the carpet fiber. Use a damp clean cloth or paper towels to gently dab the spill, until all the spilled substance gets transferred from the carpet to the cleaning material. Blot from the outside of the spot towards its center in order to limit the damage on your carpet.
Use club soda
A clean cloth dampened with club soda can do wonders when you are treating a beer or wine spill on your carpet. Blot the stain carefully until the spilled liquid is no longer transferred to the cloth. If this doesn’t seem to work, as a 1 to 1 white vinegar and water solution instead. Spray it on the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes, but be careful not to oversaturate it. Then dab the spot with your cloth. You can repeat the process until the stain is no longer visible. After it is gone, use a clean cloth dampened with clean water to rinse the spot. Place several paper towels on top and press them, so that you remove as much of the water out of the fibers of your carpet.
Treat stains with proper cleaning methods
Use an ice cube to freeze gum which has been stuck on the carpet. Then scrape it away with a spoon carefully, so as not to damage the fibers. Greasy stains are best treated with some mild dish washing solution and lukewarm water. Spray it on the stain and blot it. Repeat if necessary. After you are done, use clean water on a cloth to rinse the spot off. Dry it with paper towels.
